| Subject: | Call for Comments on the JTC 1 PAS Process and Call for Participants to Serve on the JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on Publicly Available Specifications |
At the July 21-22, 1998 JTC 1 TAG meeting the JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on Publicly Available Specifications was established. The JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on PAS will develop the US contribution to the JTC 1 PAS Ad Hoc and select the US delegation (to consist of no more than three US delegates) to the November 1998 JTC 1 PAS Ad Hoc meeting.
Resolution 50 of the June 1998 JTC 1 Plenary in Sendai, Japan provides background information:
Resolution 50 - Potential Revision of the PAS ProcessMr. Frost, the JTC 1 TAG Chairman, appointed Mr. Jameson to serve as the Chairman of the JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on Publicly Available Specifications. The following individuals volunteered to participate on the JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on PAS: Ms. Baronas (Xerox), Mr. Heil (Compaq), Ms. Higginbottom (Hewlett-Packard), Mr. Kisor (Intel), Mr. Michael (Apple), Mr. Oksala (Unisys), Mr. Robinson (Sun), Mr. Urman (IBM), and Mr. Willingmyre (Microsoft).1. JTC 1 instructs its secretariat to request National Bodies and recognized PAS Submitters to make proposals and comments relating to the operation of the PAS process, which is documented in Supplement 1 of the JTC 1 Directives and in the PAS Management Guide, JTC 1 N3582. Contributions should be received by 30 September 1998.
2. JTC 1 authorizes a meeting of the PAS ad hoc convened by Mr. Hartmann in mid-November 1998 with the objective of preparing draft revisions to these documents, for finalization at the next JTC 1 plenary. However, JTC 1 encourages the ad hoc group, before actually convening the meeting, to pursue the possibility of using electronic collaboration tools for the revision work as much as possible.
3. In the meantime JTC 1 would like to encourage potential PAS submitters to apply and approved submitters to make proposals for transposition. Documents submitted pending changes to the process will be allowed to complete their processing according to the existing procedures; to this effect JTC 1 therefore extends the trial period until such time as the amended procedures come into force.
Unanimous
Additional JTC 1 TAG members wishing to participate on the JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on Publicly Available Specifications should notify the JTC 1 TAG Administrator (jgarner@itic.nw.dc.us) by August 21, 1998. Comments on the JTC 1 PAS Process should be sent to the JTC 1 TAG Administrator (jgarner@itic.nw.dc.us) no later than August 21, 1998.
The JTC 1 TAG Ad Hoc on Publicly Available Specifications will meet September 1-2, 1998 in Boca Raton, Florida to develop the US contribution to the JTC 1 PAS Ad Hoc and select the US delegation to the November 1998 JTC 1 PAS Ad Hoc meeting.
National Body contributions are due to the JTC 1 Secretariat no later than September 30, 1998.
